Job Summary
The Manager, Structural and Mechanical Engineering is a critical role within O&M Depart of Avangrid’s Offshore Wind business focusing on the delivery of O&M scope of works in the for offshore wind projects in the USA. This role will work with Contractors, Multinational Joint Ventures and multiple departments within Offshore O&M, Avangrid Offshore business, and Global Services to ensure that Avangrid’s long term asset value and production revenue is maximized.
Belonging to the Offshore Operations Engineering team, and reporting to the Director, the Manager, Structural and Mechanical Engineering will manage the Operations Engineering Structural and Mechanical team and will be responsible for defining O&M Strategies and plans, tendering (technical), and overseeing multi-million offshore O&M campaigns/installations. This includes management of contractors and associated interfaces, and ensuring quality, best practices and excellent H&SE performance are applied.
The Structural and Mechanical team is required to provide technical advice & expertise at all stages of the project lifecycle including construction, operation, and retirement. The Team also provides technical support to the O&M package/ site managers to ensure that delivery is to design & quality standards have been met.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical/engineering leadership of multi-million dollar offshore O&M campaigns/installations with a number of interfaces and coordination to manage within one or more of Avangrid’s offshore projects in the USA; ensure that support allows delivery within time, to budget and quality following industry best practice, HSE, regulatory and legal compliance.
- Perform detailed analysis of structural engineering issues compromising the long-term integrity of the offshore wind assets, both above water line and subsea, taking responsibility of work packages.
- Provide key and strategic advice, assessment and recommendations to the business giving input and support to the projects throughout the whole life cycle (development to decommissioning) with a focus on the mechanical systems within Balance of Plant wind farm assets; for example cranes, HVAC, cooling systems, safety systems, tanks and generators.
- Implement offshore standards, procedures, tools, best practices and quality requirements.
- Define, implement, and resource the appropriate organizational structure for technical support for the team.
- Manage the Technical team, ensuring project necessities are fully covered and resourced.
- Their team will be responsible for evaluating O&M solutions / risk levels affecting technical integrity or asset performance and giving mitigation recommendations to the O&M Department Managers to ensure that cost effective O&M solutions are identified, fully evaluated and the risk profile can be reduced appropriately by the O&M teams.
- Define the detailed maintenance required for the contracts to be placed on the turbine foundations, offshore substations and associated equipment. Responsible for ensuring it is compliant with the requirements of regulatory and statutory bodies.
- Support the Director in defining the R&D strategy in relation to O&M to bring down costs of energy and either lead or provide resources for such R&D projects.
- Evaluate the best course of action for technical interventions and present the case for it to internal Managers or external contractors based on the analyzed asset integrity status, Electricity production and other KPIs
- Provide key and strategic advice, assessment and recommendations to the business giving input and support to the projects throughout the whole life cycle.
- Work with the HSE team to develop HSE strategy for O&M works and ensure a high standard of health and safety awareness is maintained.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Structural or Mechanical Engineering
- Significant industry experience (10 years minimum) with at least 5 years in either Offshore Wind or Oil & Gas
- Sound knowledge in the area of structural integrity, inspection and maintenance activities
- IT literate with the ability to operate MS Office systems and other IT based project management
- Eligible to work in the US
- Flexible to travel around the US and overseas
- Experience in managing high skilled teams.
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to scrutinize complex engineering problems, carry out root-cause analysis, propose engineering solutions
- Self-motivated with a flexible approach to work; independent and autonomous individual; able to adapt quickly to a rapidly changing in working environment and demonstrate a positive approach to change.
- Ability to climb steel structures to perform engineering inspections of wind turbine and offshore substation foundations and other equipment.
- Ability to occasionally lift items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to complete GWO basic safety and sea survival training
- Ability to complete Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET)
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Structural or Mechanical Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent
- Experience with Offshore Wind development and operations
- Foreign languages (Spanish, French, German)
